NERF wars are great fun. HOwever after a while of shooting anyone and everyone, you might find yourself looking for something a little more challenging. So fear not, we have come up with some short and fun games to spice up your NERF wars (and feel free to check out this article for more NERF war games)
While this is not a comprehensive list, this compilation will give you a fairly good idea of what is possible with a few NERF guns and a little imagination.
This is the classic team game of elimination. Split yourselves into two teams. Each player is given three hits before they find themselves out of the game – usually you do something like putting 3 handkerchiefs in your belt and lose one each time you are hit.
There are various rules for what to do after each hit. We like to have a respawn point, video game style, where you have to go after each hit to drop your handkerchief and start again.
Other versions have the hit player slowly count out loud to 15 and yell “clear” before they are allowed to re-join.
There are many variations on this basic game, so knock yourself out
This game is a variant on the classic elimination game. Each team will select a VIP who will be marked accordingly using a brightly coloured hat, jackete, etc. If the VIP is tagged, the game is over, so protect your VIP.
Non-VIP players have infinite lives but when they are hit they must stay still for 15 seconds or return to a respawn area to rejoin..
This type of battle works best with set boundaries and in an area that is semi-open so that the VIP cannot simply hide.
CAPTURE THE FLAG
Capture the Flag is exactly what you would expect, NERFed-up twist on the classic attack and defend team game.
Each team has a flag, each positioned at either end of the playing area. Each team must defend their own flag while attempting to capture the opposing team’s flag and bring it back to their base to win.
To defend your banner, you may shoot oncoming attackers who will then be forced to to respawn. Some variations have people return to their home base to respawn, but we found this just reinforced their base and moved the respawn point to the middle of the playing area instead.
This is a variation on capture the flag in that there is only one flag to capture and neither team knows where it is!
The referee hides the object somewhere in the playing area, so neither team knows where it is. The aim is for the teams to get it back to their home base.
This is a twist on any of the above games and if you’ve seen the movie or read the book, then you know how to play the game.
To start off, nobody has any weapons. All the blasters, ammo are either placed in a pile or positioned around the playing area.
Then, on a given signal, all players will charge into the fray of whatever game you are playing and retrieve whatever they can grab without getting tagged.
We like to play a rule that you can only carry one blaster and whenever you are tagged you must drop it and all your ammo before returning to your spawn point. This is a great way of evening things up if some of your players are less well armed than others!
These are just a few games you can play with your friends and a few handy NERF guns, there are countless more, so get out there and happy NERFing!
